RIHousing 50 years, Brining Rhode Island Home

2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of RIHousing. We are incredibly grateful to have reached this milestone.

We are proud of the collective positive impact RIHousing has made on Rhode Island since 1973.

RIHousing 50th Anniversary: Leadership

As part of RIHousing’s 50th anniversary, our current and former Executive Directors reflect on the meaningful impact the agency has made on Rhode Island.

#RIHousing50: Bite-sized stories and facts from our 50 year history

RIHousing’s current offices are located in the historic Slade and Earle Buildings located on Washington Street in Providence. Take a look back at the work that transformed the formerly vacant buildings into the space it is today.

The Slade Building was originally built by George Slade, a real estate merchant in 1881. The Earle Building was built in 1895 by William H. Earle.

RIHousing restored the Earle Building to its original appearance in 2001-2002.

RIHousing held a series of seminars for partner lenders to ensure first-time homebuyers could be successful.

Back then, we had 13 partner lenders. Today, we have over 45 partner lenders and continue to provide seminars (now held virtually!) to ensure success.

In 1975, we reported having a total of 9 “corporation staff” members! Today, we’re proud to share we’ve grown to over 200 employees across all programs that serve Rhode Island.

Do you know which development project was the first to receive a permanent construction loan from RIHousing?
Answer: This development is Bannister House in the year 1975.

Since 1988, RIHousing has administered the Federal Low- Income Housing Tax Credit to finance the construction or preservation of over 5,500 apartments units.

One such development is Georgiaville Village Green in Smithfield, which offers 42 units of affordable housing to families

Did you know that Centennial Towers was the first multifamily development to receive multi-family mortgage financing from RIHousing in 1976?

Still standing today, it is a nine story 101-unit elderly housing development located in Pawtucket.

Since 1988, RIHousing has administered the Federal Low- Income Housing Tax Credit to finance the construction or preservation of over 5,500 apartments units.

One such development is Georgiaville Village Green in Smithfield, which offers 42 units of affordable housing to families

Thirty years ago, RIHousing sponsored a nationwide Accessible Design Competition to help stimulate new ideas for making housing easier to navigate for people with disabilities.

Today, we remain committed to building homes that are accessible for all Rhode Islanders

In our 1994 Annual Report, we highlighted the rehabilitation of 50 Washington Square in Newport, a former Army/Navy YMCA listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was developed into a mixed-use emergency shelter and temporary and permanent apartments as well as on-site counseling for residents.

In October 2022, Church Community Housing Corporation received approval to undergo extensive rehabilitation of the building, including addition of solar panels and efficient heating and cooling systems

In 2007, the RIHousing HelpCenter, a HUD-approved counseling agency, launched to help Rhode Island homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Here is some of our original branding.
