Housing Choice Voucher Program

Guide to RI Communities – West Greenwich

As an RIHousing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holder, you have the ability to choose a rental home in one of 19 Rhode Island communities. We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of living in any of those communities. With a Housing Choice Voucher, you are required to pay 30-40% of your income towards rent. RIHousing will pay the balance of the rental payment directly to your landlord.

West Greenwich is one of Rhode Island’s most rural communities, with substantial areas of forest. The town borders Connecticut to the west, East Greenwich to the east, and Coventry to the north. Though town services are located along Route 102 (also known as Victory Highway), which runs north-south just west of the central part of town, most commercial activity can be found at any of the four I-95 exits, which also runs through the town. Exits 7 and 6 are near East Greenwich and Coventry, specifically, near the Centre of New England, which is a very large shopping area; and Exit 5, near the border with Exeter. Route 3, also known as Nooseneck Hill Rd., runs north-south parallel to I-95 as a local road, where the regional junior and senior high schools are located.

Living in West Greenwich:
Given its rural nature, there are few densely developed residential areas. The northeast corner near I-95 is the most densely developed area; however, there may be modest single family homes scattered throughout the town.

To use your voucher here, your rent cannot exceed the Fair Market Rate.

What is the Fair Market Rate?

  • FMRs regularly published by HUD, represent the cost to rent a moderately-priced dwelling unit in the local housing market. The housing voucher tenant must pay 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard, the tenant is required to pay the additional amount.
