Housing Choice Voucher Program

Guide to RI Communities – Middletown

As an RIHousing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holder, you have the ability to choose a rental home in one of 19 Rhode Island communities. We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of living in any of those communities. With a Housing Choice Voucher, you are required to pay 30-40% of your income towards rent. RIHousing will pay the balance of the rental payment directly to your landlord.

Middletown

Middletown sits quite literally in the middle of Aquidneck Island’s three municipalities, with Portsmouth to its north and Newport to its south. As part of the island, it is accessible to the mainland via the Claiborne Pell Bridge or the Mt. Hope Bridge at the northern tip of the island. Aquidneck Island is also accessible from Fall River and Tiverton via Route 24 over the Sakonnet River Bridge. Routes 138 (East Main Road) and 114 (West Main Road) are the main routes traveling north and south. The town offers a substantial amount of commercial activity and other services within relatively short distances.

Living in Middletown:

The town has a fairly balanced availability of single family and multi-family homes. The U.S. Navy still has a substantial presence, which lends the town’s breakdown of nearly half renters and owners.

To use your voucher here, your rent cannot exceed the Fair Market Rate.

What is the Fair Market Rate?

  • FMRs regularly published by HUD, represent the cost to rent a moderately-priced dwelling unit in the local housing market. The housing voucher tenant must pay 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard, the tenant is required to pay the additional amount.
