Guide to Rhode Island Communities

Housing Choice Voucher Program

As an RIHousing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holder, you have the ability to choose a rental home in one of 20 Rhode Island communities. We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of living in any of those communities. With a Housing Choice Voucher, you are required to pay 30-40% of your income towards rent. RIHousing will pay the balance of the rental payment directly to your landlord.

Hopkinton

Hopkinton

Hopkinton is a part of South (or Washington) County, where villages are abundant! The villages often cross municipal boundaries and appear within more than one town. Despite their rural nature, there is commercial activity and some services located within these villages.

Hopkinton borders Connecticut on its western side; the town of Richmond on its east, and Charlestown to its south. These three towns also form the school district known as Chariho. Hopkinton’s major routes are Route 3 (Main St.), which runs northeast to southwest through the town; Route 138, in the north, also known as Rockville Rd./Spring St. There is also an exit from I-95 at Hope Valley, Exit 2, to Rte. 138W.

Living in Hopkinton:

There are 5 zip codes for HCV holders to choose from—four of which are villages, and one for Hopkinton. Each village offers proximity to different stores and access points to other places. There are a fair number of two-family structures along the main thoroughfares through the villages, as well as modest single-family homes that may represent rental possibilities.

To use your voucher here, your rent cannot exceed the Fair Market Rate.

What is the Fair Market Rate?

FMRs regularly published by HUD, represent the cost to rent a moderately-priced dwelling unit in the local housing market. The housing voucher tenant must pay 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard, the tenant is required to pay the additional amount.
