Description: Beachwinds Apartments is a 104-unit affordable housing community consisting of two senior developments, Beachwood Apartments and South Winds Apartments, in Narragansett, RI. Originally built in 1977, the properties have undergone extensive renovation to improve energy efficiency, sustainability and improved ventilation, along with new exterior siding, replacement and roof repair, new windows, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, renovated and expanded community rooms, and the conversion of 6 apartments to fully compliant ADA units.
In 2020, POAH applied for and received an allocation of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and tax-exempt bonds from RIHousing in order to re-syndicate the property and finance the renovations.
The Beach Avenue Apartments is the adaptive reuse of former emergency shelter space by Crossroads.
The site was originally home to the Rhode Island Family Shelter before Crossroads was asked to manage it in 2015. Renamed to the Beach Avenue Apartments, it offered permanent supportive housing and emergency shelter space. In 2018, Crossroads Rhode Island closed the shelter portion for redevelopment.
The redevelopment now offers a total of 11 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals and families– 7 existing units and 4 new units. The new units consist of 1 one-bedroom unit, 1 two-bedroom unit and 2 three-bedroom units.
