Section 8 Project-based Program
Rhode Island Housing manages 20,000 apartments for income-eligible individuals, families, senior citizens and people with disabilities. About 15,000 of these apartments are eligible for rental assistance from Section 8 funding. Detailed information is available by following the link above.
Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
In addition to managing 20,000 apartments for low-income senior citizens, families and individuals with disabilities (three-quarters of which are eligible for Section 8 rental assistance) Rhode Island Housing manages the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in Rhode Island.
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s major program for helping eligible participants afford safe, healthy homes in their community. The Housing Choice Voucher program allows the individual or family to choose a home, including their present home, and use a voucher to obtain rental assistance. The landlord must agree to the terms of the program and the home must meet safety requirements.
The landlord receives a housing subsidy directly from the public housing authority (PHA) on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
Housing Choice Vouchers are administered locally by PHAs. The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program.
More information about the Housing Choice Voucher Program is available on our website, or contact Keisha Almonte at firstname.lastname@example.org or 401 429-1483. For detailed information, you can also view the documents that are available from HUD, listed on this sections’ Resources page.
